Thanks Jerrry, you're spot on, "The onus of wellness is placed squarely on YOU", indeed! There are so many bonuses to that, I'm glad you like it.

Cheers Robert! It's always great to feel more empowered in your own health. Sometimes we all fall foul of 'bag of chips' moments and give in to stuff we know isn't good for us, but even then, it's better to have made the choice ;) It's that choice that makes the difference between mindless atrophy and active self-improvement.

BTW, Robert's site "The complete guide to the Alexander Technique" has loads of good resources, and his Body Learning site has some really informative podcasts...

James, I wholeheartedly agree. Everything in the Technique is predicated on awareness. You can't work on that which you can't sense, feel or see. I am the boss of me,yes. This too is one of the most powerful lessons to take away from practicing AT. The onus of wellness is placed squarely on YOU, you are responsible for your own well being, not a doctor, a psychiatrist or a pill. Thanks for this great reminder.

Great post James. I think it's often that students can actually start to take charge of themselves that contributes to that happiness. A lot of my students have spent time in the medical world first which is often a very dis-empowering experience. The Alexander Technique learning process presents something quite different.

That's great Ron, please do.
There are couple of really great books on Alexander Technique for musicians by a fellow called Pedro de Alcantara, it might be worth looking him up in a bookstore. Also good is "How you Stand, How you Move, How you Live" by Missy Vineyard.
I hope your son manages to recover well, and maybe someday soon an Alexander Teacher will move in up the road or something!
All the best,
James.

Thanks, James, for visiting us at Your Body of Knowledge and creating the link to your blog.

I'm going to check out your e-course - in part because my son- a pianist - is having some troubles recovering from repetitive strain injury to his hands and forearms right now and it's frustrating to try to help him fro afar to get the help he needs.

Maybe I can forward him your e-course and he can benefit. The Alexander technique (and similar methods) seem so subtle at first (until you let the new knowledge begin to sink into your brain.)

Hi Sharon,
That's brilliant, thanks for the lovely comment. Liberating indeed! I'm so glad I found AT. I remember Dr Wohl saying to me "You're so lucky, to have found this technique" when I began all those years ago, and I still feel the same. See you next week,
James.

I feel so much better after my sessions in Alexander Technique, and I can sense that this is a technique that will make my life easier, comfier and dare I say it - painfree - with no nasty uncomfortable or invasive therapies. It's a liberating discovery, many thanks James.
